Celestial Bodies

Careful observation of the universe from Earth can help us understand events on Earth and beyond

This Year 8 unit, also called The Heavens, is naked-eye astronomy done properly. Students learn to describe and explain what they can actually see from the ground: the path of the Sun across the sky through the seasons, the phases of the Moon, the difference between planets and stars, and the slow wheel of the constellations through the night. The emphasis is on building a working mental model of the Earth–Sun–Moon system rather than memorising facts.

The key concept is relationships, with related concepts of movement, pattern and interaction, in the global context of scientific and technical innovation. The work rewards careful observation and clear diagrammatic reasoning — students are expected to work out, for example, where the Sun rises at a given latitude and season from first principles rather than recall.

Inquiry questions include: How do the stars move in the night sky? What are the phases of the Moon, and why do they happen? Why is there summer and winter?

The unit is assessed against the MYP Sciences criteria, with a strong criterion D thread — reflecting on how observation of the heavens has shaped human understanding — alongside a knowledge-based end-of-unit test.
